Another Mirror, Another World
I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.
–Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Disney’s Alice in Wonderland was one of my favorite childhood movies. Whenever I watched it, I felt like I was going on an adventure with Alice in this trippy weird world filled with these nonsensical talking creatures. Since then I had an affinity for items and objects that reminded me of Wonderland like tea parties, cookies, pretty chinaware, playing cards, chess pieces, and mirrors.
Mirrors are cool, they’re like doorways to a different world/universe. Mirrors could be a doorway to a world opposite from ours or a completely warped, tripped-out world. Since the MySpace days, I’ve always enjoyed taking mirror selfies. Most of those selfies taken at that time were blanked out by the bright flash illuminated by a digital camera. When I got my hand on an iPhone, I had more freedom and creativity to take selfies on reflective surfaces. The more odd, weird the mirror is placed, the cooler the reflection and image will be.
Some artist have used mirrors or reflective surfaces in their works. Yayoi Kusama uses mirrors in multiple pieces to show a few objects an infinite amount.
Mariko Mori’s Miko No Inori uses a reflective image of an airport to create a futuristic setting.
Back to Wonderland talk, Adventures in Wonderland has Alice visit Wonderland via a full-length mirror. Being a Native New Yorker, I’ve been to the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park multiple times. Here is a photo of me from many years ago.
