Things that scared me as a child
We're upon Spooky Scary Skeletons season aka Halloween/Fall season. It's time to break out the creepy decorations, cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes and your laughter for some things that freaked me out as a child.
Skeletons
I don't know what kind of existential crisis I had when I was 5-6 years old, but Skeletons freaked me out. I was also horrified when I learned that we all have skeleton structures inside us, holding all our parts together. Sir Daniel Fortesque from MediEvil, The Horned King from The Black Cauldron, and the skeletons of the first man and women display in the Museum of Natural History all gave me spooky nightmares.
Now, my favorite sweater has a skull and crossbones on it and I draw rib cages and skulls, funny how life is.
Lavender Town from Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow
Pokemon die?!? In a game where trainers train their Pokemon to defeat other Pokemon in battles?!?... I’m being sarcastic... it's hard to translate sarcasm in writing.
But yeah, Lavender Town and the song that plays scared me. The mission you have to complete in the graveyard is pretty sad (Team Rocket killing Cubone’s Mothers). When you think it’s over… it comes back (theme and music) when you meet with Agatha in the Elite 4.
I grew out of that fear and got into watching Let's Plays of Horror video games as a teenager. I also played the multiple remakes of Red, Blue and Yellow.
The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary
How is this a children's educational game?! Your character looks like a mutated Cabbage Patch Doll. The setting is an island and the colors are bleak and bland, were the devs inspired by the beaches of NYC?! I was freaked out by the game when I was six, now I'm just put off by it via screenshots.
The game is great if you want to be freaked out by unsettling graphics and Math.
